The Islamic Golden Age began with the establishment of the first Islamic state in Medina in 622 CE and the subsequent rise of Islamic power. It is generally considered to have ended with the Mongol siege and sack of Baghdad in 1258 CE. The fall of the Emirate of Granada in 1492 CE, as a result of the Christian Reconquista in the Iberian Peninsula, is also sometimes considered the end of the Islamic Golden Age.
During the reign of the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid, the establishment and development of the Bayt al-Hikma (House of Wisdom) in Baghdad created tremendous opportunities for intellectual and scholarly activities. During the Fatimid period, Egypt became the center of the empire. The Fatimid territories included parts of North Africa, Sicily, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Red Sea coast of Africa, the Tihamah, the Hejaz, and Yemen.
During this era, the major cities of the Muslim world—Baghdad, Cairo, and Córdoba—became intellectual centers of science, philosophy, medicine, commerce, and education. Arab and Muslim scholars showed great interest in the scientific knowledge of the territories they conquered. Many classical works that were in danger of being lost were translated into Arabic and Persian. Later, some of these works were translated into Turkish, Hebrew, and Latin.
Muslim scholars adopted, reviewed, preserved, and further developed knowledge inherited from the ancient Greek, Roman, Persian, Indian, Chinese, Egyptian, and Phoenician civilizations. The Qur'an and Hadith emphasize the importance of education and the pursuit of knowledge in various places. Religious values played an important role in encouraging and inspiring Muslims to acquire knowledge, study, and make advances in different fields of science.
The Islamic empires of the time provided significant patronage to scholars and intellectuals. In many cases, the state covered the expenses of scholarly activities. The translation movement of the period required substantial financial resources. Scholars and translators such as Hunayn ibn Ishaq received considerable patronage for their work. During the Abbasid period, Caliph al-Mansur established a major library in Baghdad, which later became associated with the great scholarly tradition of the House of Wisdom.
Islamic traditions and educational practices were strongly centered on religious texts and scholarship. Because the Qur'an, Hadith, and other religious teachings were widely studied and disseminated, education became an important foundation of Islamic intellectual life. The importance of learning and acquiring knowledge is mentioned in numerous Hadiths. One famous saying attributed to the Prophet Muhammad encourages people to seek knowledge even if they have to travel as far as China. Such teachings were widely promoted and applied by Muslim scholars and communities throughout the Muslim world.
The scholar Burhan al-Din al-Zarnuji expressed the importance of education by stating that acquiring knowledge is an obligation upon everyone. Although it is impossible to determine the exact literacy rate of pre-modern Islamic societies, it is clear that they achieved a comparatively high level of development in education and scholarship. Particularly when compared with contemporary Europe, Muslim scholars made significant advances in many fields of knowledge.
Education often began at a young age. Children learned Arabic and the Qur'an either at home or in elementary schools, many of which were associated with mosques. Later, many students studied Islamic interpretation, jurisprudence, and other religious disciplines. These subjects were given considerable importance.
The educational system relied heavily on memorization, but talented and advanced students were also trained to read, write, interpret, and critically discuss scholarly texts. This process also played an important role in the socialization of aspiring scholars. As a result, scholars and ulama emerged from a wide variety of social backgrounds.
In mathematics, Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi played a major role in the development of algebra, algorithms, and the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. He is often regarded as the father of algebra.
Ibn Mu'adh al-Jayyani was another important Islamic mathematician who is renowned for his work on the law of sines. In the 11th century, he wrote The Book of Unknown Arcs of a Sphere. His work extended the use of the sine relationship beyond right-angled triangles and established relationships between the sides of a triangle and the sines of its opposite angles.

Here, A, B, and C represent the three angles of a triangle, while a, b, and c represent the lengths of the sides opposite those respective angles. In other words, side a is opposite angle A, side b is opposite angle B, and side c is opposite angle C.
Around 964 CE, the Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi, in his famous work The Book of Fixed Stars, described a nebulous object in the constellation of Andromeda. He provided one of the earliest detailed descriptions of the object that is now known as the Andromeda Galaxy, the nearest large spiral galaxy to the Milky Way.
To address problems in Ptolemy's astronomical model, Nasir al-Din al-Tusi developed a geometric device known as the Tusi couple. This mathematical method demonstrated how linear motion could be produced from the combination of two circular motions.
The Tusi couple was later used in the development of Ibn al-Shatir's geocentric astronomical model and was also incorporated into Nicolaus Copernicus's heliocentric model. However, it is still uncertain whether there was an intermediary who transmitted this method to Copernicus or whether Copernicus independently rediscovered it.
